Ocean Park Celebrates Historic Debut of Hong Kong's Homegrown Panda Cubs

2025-02-16

Ocean Park is delighted to announce the highly anticipated public debut of Hong Kong's first-ever homegrown giant panda cubs born on 15 August 2024 to mother Ying Ying. Their public debut at Giant Panda Adventure will start from 16 February 2025. The exhibit will be open daily from 10am to 3pm.

The Giant Panda Twins Cubs Greeting Ceremony was graced by the presence of Mr John Lee, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and his wife, Mrs Janet Lee, along with Mr Zheng Yanxiong,Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR; Mr Pan Yundong, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in HKSAR; Mr Tan Zhiwei, Deputy Commander-in-chief of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison and Miss Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism. Distinguished guests representing tourism, business, conservation and education sectors were also in attendance.

"On behalf of Ocean Park, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Central Government and the HKSAR Government for entrusting us with the care of these giant pandas," said Paulo Pong, Chairman of the Board of Ocean Park Corporation. "Today, we celebrate a heartwarming and proud moment as Hong Kong's first homegrown panda cubs turn six months old and are ready to meet the public. Thanks to the dedication of the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) and our professional animal care team, the cubs have grown from just over 110 and 120 grams at birth to approximately 12 kilograms each. Over the past six months, panda fever has swept the city, “pandas are everywhere”, thanks to the tremendous support of our sponsors and partners. This phenomenon has connected Hong Kong with panda lovers worldwide, further promoting Hong Kong's tourism and culture. Ocean Park remains committed to giant panda conservation, research, and education, and we invite everyone to visit the park and meet Elder Sister, Little Brother, Ying Ying, Le Le, An An, and Ke Ke. We will continue to introduce more panda-themed experiences in the future."

Giant Panda Twin Cubs Naming Competition officially launches
Choose the most representative names for Hong Kong's first homegrown panda cubs! From now until 7 March, Hong Kong residents can participate in the Giant Panda Twin Cubs Naming Competition and give these adorable twins a pair of meaningful names. Participants simply need to fill in the form, submit two name suggestions (one for each cub, excluding the nicknames Elder Sister and Little Brother), on the campaign website and provide an explanation of the meaning behind the proposed names (up to 100 characters). A judging panel will select the winning names based on their meaning, creativity, and how well they reflect the cubs' playful and charming personalities.

Special arrangements for meeting the giant panda twin cubs
To provide more visitor with the opportunity to see the adorable cubs during the initial high-demand period, the following crowd management will be in place.

Giant Panda Adventure can accommodate about 100 visitors at a time, and these procedures are designed to enable up to a few thousands of visitors to meet the cubs each day. Visitors may consider visiting on weekdays or off-peak periods to avoid crowds and minimise waiting times.

Visitors arriving before park opens should proceed to the designated queuing area as directed by staff and signage. Once the park opens, visitors will queue for Giant Panda Adventure and enter the exhibit in a continuous flow. Timed queue line re-entry tickets will be distributed where needed, allowing visitors to explore other attractions and return to the queue at their designated time, thereby reducing some waiting time.

Inside the exhibit, visitors will follow a one-way route, first encountering giant panda Ying Ying, then the twins, and finally Le Le. Along the journey, visitors will also be able to see other animal ambassadors from Sichuan, such as the red pandas and Chinese salamanders. Due to the cubs' husbandry schedule, both twins may not be visible simultaneously at all times. The entire experience is expected to take approximately five minutes, whereas the viewing time for the giant panda cubs is expected to be approximately one to two minutes during peak hours.

For the comfort of the giant pandas and the enjoyment of all, please maintain a quiet atmosphere and refrain from using flash photography. Capturing video is recommended over still photos.
