The giant panda twins born to Ying Ying turned one-week old today! After navigating the newborn weight loss period, the twins are gradually stabilising and gaining weight but remain fragile. Giant pandas’ iconic black patches are also vaguely visible on the cubs’ eyes, ears and shoulders.
The twin girl now weighs around 172g, while the twin boy weighs around 168g, with normal fluctuations. They are both feeding and defecating normally under the assistance of experts from the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP). The twin cubs are also displaying healthy appetites by drinking up to 10g milk per meal, six time per day.
Although the two cubs are stabilising, they are still fragile and are under 24-hour intensive care, monitored by the CCRCGP experts and the animal care team at Ocean Park. Meanwhile, caretakers are supporting the first-time mother Ying Ying with her post-labour recovery by ensuring her fluid and food intake, which in turn can also help her to nurse the cubs. Experts are trying to milk her so that both cubs can consume as much of her milk as possible.
To make room for Ying Ying to practise motherhood, CCRCGP experts and the Park’s animal care team have been gradually increasing the time of introducing the cubs to her. Ying Ying has been displaying signs of improvement in her caring and nursing behaviours.
