(Hong Kong – 27 November 2012) Ocean Park Channel was successfully launched on 1 August and the first 10 episodes of “Ocean Park InsideTrax” will be posted on Ocean Park’s YouTube Channel, website and Facebook fans page each month over a 10 month period. This series of documentaries have revealed some exclusive scenes of Ocean Park’s animal care practices, while delivering the message of ‘We Conserve What We Love’. Do not miss out on how parrots are trained to fly in a circle, what interactive enrichment objects are designed for dolphins and giant pandas, what snacks are prepared for jelly fish, and how trainers trim the claws of parrots! An interactive online quiz will also be introduced to “Ocean Park InsideTrax” and winners will have a chance to join an exclusive ‘Sea Jelly Spectacular Behind-The-Scenes Tour’ for free.
In the second episode of “Ocean Park InsideTrax”, ‘The Secret Life of a Giant Panda’, host Donna tours the back-of-house facilities of Giant Panda Adventure, where she met Elke, a giant panda trainer. Elke shares her experience of getting along with giant pandas, while introducing us to a huge refrigerating room specially designed to store bamboo. At the same time, she also demonstrates husbandry training for giant pandas, from measuring blood pressure to body weight and temperature.
A talking parrot may not be a surprise, but have you ever wondered how parrots are trained to do various tasks? Bird trainer Jason demonstrates how to train a parrot to perform short-distance flight and circle around the Bird Theatre. As birds are naturally highly sensitive to their surroundings, how do trainers build a trusting relationship with the parrots in order to conduct husbandry training and even trim their claws? Tune in to ‘Meet the talking Parrot’ to find out more!
‘The Toy Designers’ showcases some of the interactive enrichment objects our animal teams designed for the animals, to allow them to exercise regularly and stay healthy. Take dolphins as an example - trainers would put some fish in a plastic bottle and let the dolphins figure out how to extract them through a narrow bottleneck. Lok, a marine mammal trainer, says, ‘we wish to provide the animals with various stimulations and enrichment so that they can learn and grow continuously. The point of creating such elaborate interactive objects is to encourage the animals to move and exercise, which helps them stay strong and healthy.’
Tin, the Park’s aquarist, shares his experience in rearing and breeding jelly fish in the latest episode, ‘Sea Jelly Wonders’. He would also demonstrate how to prepare jelly snacks for jelly fish to enjoy. Be sure to follow ‘Sea Jelly Wonders’, to learn about different species of jelly fish and admire their elegance as they swim along. In addition, Ocean Park will introduce an interactive online quiz to the Ocean Park Facebook fan page after airing ‘Sea Jelly Wonders’, and winners could join a complimentary ‘Sea Jelly Spectacular Behind-The-Scenes Tour’ at the Park and meet our jelly fish keepers in person. .
