The Ocean Park STEAM Student Competition 2022

Ocean Park and Fortinet are proud to present “The Ocean Park STEAM Student Competition 2022”. Hong Kong primary and secondary school students are invited to submit creative solutions for animal conservation issues.

What is the relationship between cyber security and animal conservation? Nowadays, scientists use connected devices for animal conservation work, such as using surveillance cameras to detect illegal poaching, tracking migration routing and mating habits. Researchers also digitize their research data, and often store it in the cloud storage or send it over the internet. While this data can effectively help animal conservation, any cybersecurity vulnerability could put endangered animals at risk as criminals often make use of security loopholes to steal data, so they can track down and illegally poach wild animals.

In this competition, students design and construct an animatronic with different sensors to collect data. Then they will plan a secure network design to transfer the data to the scientists.

Ocean Park is delighted to partner with the cybersecurity experts at Fortinet to share how to stay safe online. Competition participants will learn about network safety and how to maintain a secure network. Then they can try to apply a proper network safety plan for their animatronic prototypes.

Theme of Competition

Background

There are many unknown mysteries about nature and wildlife that are still waiting for us to discover. Scientists from all over the world apply different technologies to record and collect data from animals for investigation. Using animatronics is one of the methods to observe and record the lives of wild animals without disturbing them. The animatronics are usually deployed to remote nature reserves, therefore all data recorded from the animatronics will be transmitted through the internet for further scientific investigation.

However, poaches also target this valuable data and could steal the data from the internet to predict the location of the endangered animals. A high level of cyber security for data storage and transmission is therefore very important!

Theme Participants will
“Animatronic - The Animal Spy”
  1. Design and construct an animatronic prototype
  2. Set up sensors on the animatronic for collecting environmental data
  3. Propose a secure network design for data transmission

Eligibility

  1. Hong Kong local Secondary school and Primary school
  2. Maximum of 2 teams from each school
  3. Maximum of 3 students in each team and each student can only be in 1 team
  4. At least 1 supervising teacher from each school
