The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is a conservation agreement among governments. It aims to safeguard wild animals and plants by regulating international trade. The protected species are listed in one of the following appendices:
Appendix I | Threatened with extinction, thus international trade for commercial purposes is prohibited |
Appendix II | Not currently threatened with extinction, but international trade must be strictly regulated to avoid such consequences |
Appendix III | Regionally protected, but requires international cooperation to regulate the trade |
